Norfolk Island is famous for its tall, geometric conifers, the Norfolk Island Pines. They certainly make wonderful elements - or foreground interest - in photographs. I had been tasked with finding a perfect pine for the documentary we were shooting, and on this day, I felt I had found a worthy candidate. It was the symmetry of the tree in the centre of the frame that first caught my eye. But off to the left is a rough pine with a forked head, and on the right, a forest of contesting pines. They each have their own unique form and character. So, who is the winner? The breathtaking sunrise and seemingly endless sea offered the perfect stage to settle the contest. The central pine became my hero for this shot.
